Things to know about the Republic Day of India

India became an independent nation in 1947 and adopted a republic constitution on January 26, 1950. Since then, the day is celebrated as the Republic Day of India. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar drafted the Indian constitution. It took Dr Ambedkar 2 years and 11 months to complete the constitution of India.

Where is the constitution of India at present?

The first copy of the Indian constitution was not printed. It was handwritten in both Hindi and English. The font used was calligraphy. The original book of Constitution of India lies in a special helium filled case in the library of the Parliament of India.

Where was the first Republic day Parade held?

The first Republic Day Parade was held in 1950 in Rajpath. Rajpath is a road that runs from Rashtrapati Bhawan to the India Gate. President Sukarno of Indonesia was the first chief guest of the Republic Day celebration.

Rajpath became the permanent venue for the Republic Day Parade in 1955. Between 1950 to 1955, the Parade was held at different venues like Red Fort, National Stadium, and Ramlila Ground.

In 1930 in January 26, Republic day was celebrated as “Poorna Swaraj Day” or India’s Complete Independence day. On this day, India decided to fight for complete freedom.

What is done in the Republic Day?

Republic Day Parade is a public display of India’s strength in terms of defence and cultural diversity. The Parade displays the defense equipment from Indian Air Force, Navy, and Military. The Parade boosts the confidence among Indians that they safe under any circumstances.

India’s Republic Day is also a national dry day. Except in Goa, all other wine and beer shops across India are closed on this day.

Republic Day celebration is actually a 3 day event. It ends on January 29 with a beating retreat held at Vijay Chowk of Delhi.

The President of India takes the center stage, hosts the national flag on the Republic day. The President takes the military salute as the Commander in Chief of the Indian Armed Force. The Indian State Governors take respective military salutes in their state capitals.
