The Night of Bright Lights!

Let’s travel a little on this Diwali vacation to see how the rest of India welcomes the festival celebrating triumph of good over evil!

So here I bring to you the most extravagant and spectacular destinations you must certainly add to your travel bucket list this Diwali:

A Punjabi adage goes “”Dal Roti Ghar Di, Diwali Amritsar Di”.” It’ is indeed true. The Golden Temple of Amritsar is draped with brightly lit diyas during Diwali, providing a stunning view for the onlookers. The reflection of the diyas in the water creates a truly magical view.

Diwali here coincides with a festival that marks the return of Sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahebji, who freed himself and the Hindu Kings from the Islamic ruler Jahangir and arrived at the Golden Temple.

Most of Diwali’’s aesthetic beauty comes from the warm glow of lights and lamps which adorn streets, buildings, shops and homes. The Pink City is embellished in various colors and festive lights. The markets sell over a thousand types of earthen lamps in many shapes, sizes and colors. The decked up markets are flooded with traditional clothes and handicrafts. What more, the best illuminated market wins a prize!

Varanasi or Banaras is known as both the Holy City and the City of Lights of India. It’s always abuzz with celebrations. Diwali in Varanasi is something one shouldn’t miss. A constant stream of firecrackers and fireworks going off all night long can surely give you the best-ever experience. All the Ghats are lit up with thousands of diyas. The special Ganga Aarti on the illuminated Ghats is mesmerizing.

Diwali in and around Goa begins on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi. Apart from the regular preparations and celebrations of Diwali, here paper made, scary-looking effigies of Narakasura, filled with grass and firecrackers, symbolizing the burning of evil. While we can enjoy the traditions of Diwali in Goa, one can also visit the beaches and the casinos.

  • PURUSHWADI:

Looking for a different Diwali experience? You must consider visiting this place called Purushwadi. A small village located on a hill along the Mumbai-Nashik highway. Families in this little town light a bonfire on the night of Diwali and cook local food. Kids move from door to door, singing traditional songs, inviting each household to pour oil into their oil lamps, mounted atop a handmade bundle of sticks.

  • KOVALAM:

I add this beautiful place to my list not because of the fervor of Diwali here but because Diwali is not a major festivity at this destination. While the entire nation participates in the celebrations of the festivals, if you want to escape from the hustle bustle of the celebrations, Kovalam in Kerala is the place to be. You can enjoy the picturesque view of the location and can spend quality time with friends and family.
