Simple steps to a DIY face mask at home

Wearing face masks are mandatory for all now amid the outbreak of COVID-19. This is for self protection as well as for reducing the spread of infection to others. For the public, cloth masks are effective and sufficient for this purpose. Let’s be responsible and save on the surgical masks for the healthcare workers and make one by ourselves.

Learning how to make a face mask doesn’t have to mean struggling with a complex face mask pattern or dusting off your sewing machine. You can make your own homemade face mask without touching a needle or a thread.

Do you have a t-shirt that you’re planning to discard anytime soon? Make a mask out of it.

Here’s how you can do it:

Step 1

Ideally, your T-shirt should be 100 percent cotton and as opaque as possible. To start with, simply cut the bottom off your T-shirt. The height of the amount of material you need should be the length from the top of your nose to underneath your chin (around 7-8-inches or 17-20 cm). It’s best to cut bigger than you think you need so you can trim the excess later.

Step 2

You would then need to make a cut into this material around 6-7-inches (15-17 cm) to make the ties/strings for your face mask, as shown in the above picture.

Step 3

Next, cut the strings so that you can tie them around your head and you’re good to go! Adjust until you get a snug fit around your nose and chin.
