History of Kollam
The city of Kollam was formerly known as Quilon. During the 13th and 14th century, Kollam was one of the four entrepots for India’s trade with the outside world.
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a trading center in Kollam in 1502 for pepper merchandise. But, this is not where the natives lost their control over the place. Kollam has witnessed a frequent change of reigns.
After Portuguese, in 1661, the Dutch East India Company took the possession of the city. In the 18th century, Travancore conquered Kollam. By 1795, the control of the city went into the hands of the British.
The battle of Quilon: An important milestone in the history of the city is the battle of Quilon, fought between Travancore and British East India company in 1809. This is when the city was completely occupied by the British and the next significant event is India’s struggle for freedom itself.
Kollam Culture
The majority of the population in Kollam is Hindu. Hence, one can find a number of Hindu temples in the city. The best about this city is the ancient temples and structures are preserved. For example, Anandavalleswaram Sri Mahadevar Temple is a popular Hindu temple in the city and is about 400 years old.
Another significant part of the population in Kollam comprises Christians. You will be amazed to know that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Quilon is the first Catholic diocese in India. Diocese is a district under the pastoral care of a bishop in the Christian Church.
Kollam has been a home to Muslim population for centuries. The 300 years old Juma-‘Ath Palli mosque is the example of it.
