Karwar Find A Fantasy Island
Rabindranath Tagore described the place thus: “The sea beach of Karwar is certainly a fit place in which to realize that the beauty of nature is not a mirage of the imagination, but reflects the joy of the infinite and thus draws us to lose ourselves in it.” The big, public beach in Karwar in Uttara Karnataka is named after the poet and serves a vast playground for this town, a busy trading port in ancient times. What makes Karwar a ideal getaway, though is the opportunity it affords for an island holiday. Kurumgad is a tortoise-shaped island that lies some 4 km off the Karwar coast. On the island is the Great Outdoor resort, with tents and bamboo cottage scattered amidst the greenery and the rocky outcrops. It’s the perfect place to soak in that away-from-it-all feeling, with spectacular ocean views from every point on the island. You can take long walks or swing in a hammock, catching up on the island.
Swim in a small safe beach or go on fishing trip on which you might get to spot schools of flying fish. At night, sit on the edge of a cliff, listen to charming waves and count the stars that seem to hang at touching distance.
There are things to do around; you could spend an evening at Tagore beach, where the locals come to chill. Visit the lighthouse on Oyster Rock. You can, in fact, climb up this well-preserved tower and take in the sweeping view from up there.
