Kalimpong In The Shadow Of Kanchenjung
To the Lepchas who inhabited in this region, Kalimpong means “ridge where we play.” The tribal groups were known to play field sports here, when they rested from toiling om the fields. Rich in culture and legend, bustling with bazaars and monasteries offering serenity , Kalimpong is a great place for a short break. Located at an altitude of 1,250 meters , Kalimpong has pleasant weather through the year.
This corner of West Bengal lies in the shadow of the mighty Kanchenjunga and lures visitors with its many charms. The trip from Darjeeling to Kalimpong is particularly lovely with the road dropping from Ghum to Testa Bazaar, even as it passes through green forests and manicured tea gardens.
The route from Siliguri to Kalimpong follows the majestic Teesta river as it flows from the hills towards plains. While in Kalimpong, visit Deolo and Durpin Dara- two hill stations which are connected by a ridge on which the town stands. Deolo is the highest point accessible by car and it provides a panoramic view of the town and neighboring hills. Another must-do in Kalimpong is to visit its vibrant Bazaars, where locals turns up in colorful tribal costumes to sell their produce. There’s one near 10th Mile on the Main Road.
Kalimpong is also known for its nurseries which export exotic flowers like Amaryllis, lilies, anthuriums, roses, garbera, dhalies and various types of orchids and cacti. For quiet retreat, spend some time at the Thongsha Gompa and Thapra Chorling Monastery where life revolves around prayers, chanting and meditation.
