Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, has been conferred the ‘Cleanest Tourist Destination’ by the Union Ministry of Tourism. The award was handed over by none other than our beloved Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on September 30, to the Commissioner of The Gangtok Municipal Corporation in New Delhi. It’s a proud moment for the city specially when missions like Swachh Bharat is in full flow across the country. So, lets have a quick tour of the things to do the next time you decide to head on to north-east for a gulp of fresh air.

The most famous monastery is the Rumtek Monastery. Built in 1700, it is known to be the oldest Monastery which is now a major Buddhist learning centre in the entire country. Some of the other significant monasteries are the Enchey Monastery and the Do-drul Chorten, which were built in 1840 and 1945 respectively. Enter Monastery is said to be honoured by Lama Drupthib Karpo who was believed to have flying powers and Do-drul Chorten happens to be one of the stupas housing some of the most ancient buddhist relics. gantok1 gantok2
