Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular Hindu festival celebrated mainly in the Maharasthran region. This festival is dedicated to the elephant-headed Lord Ganesha. As the name suggests, celebrations begin from the fourth day of the fortnight generally in the month of August or September. This year, it will be celebrated on the 4th of September.
The festival is celebrated by families at home and also publicly in the form of ‘pandals’ where by installing clay images of Lord Ganesha. People generally bring in small sized clay Ganeshas at home and celebrate with their loved ones. At the end of the fortnight, the idol is immersed in water.
In the preparations of the festival, a huge variety of idols are created by artisans. People buy these idols and worship them by decorating with flowers. They offer various items to the idol like coconut, jaggery, grass and modaks and chant hymns.
