Munnar is people’s favorite holiday destination and on its platter, it has so many delicacies to fulfill every visitor’s taste. The local cuisine of Munnar is Kairali cuisine, which mainly includes rasam, coconut, and rice dishes. In this read, we bring to you some of the popular food in Munnar.

A thali consists of a package of at least 5 traditional dishes. In general, in a Kairali thali, you can find vegetable pachadi (or salad), elaneer payasam (or tender coconut kheer), mezhukkupuratti (or stir-fried mixed vegetable), mixed vegetable thoran, puli inji, rice with sambar and rasam. The dishes are cooked in coconut oil, are garnished with grated coconut, and served in a banana leaf.

It is a rice dish and usually served with vegetable stew. It is a common breakfast in Munnar. In the morning you can find many push-carts selling Idiyappam in the streets.

Malabar Parotta is an Indian flat-bread with flaky layers. It is crisp, has ample amount of oil and is just delicious. You can eat it with a number of curries, vegetarian or nonvegetarian curry, it tastes awesome with any gravy.

Puttu and Kadala Curry

Puttu is a cylindrical steamed rice cake cooked with grated coconut. People  usually serve it with Kadala curry, which is a curry made from black chickpeas (or Kala chana). Natives also eat Puttu with ripe bananas and coconuts sometimes.

There is a unique style of cooking seafood and fishes in Munnar and entire Kerala. The curry incorporates the flavor of coconut and kokum (KoKum adds the tangy taste in food), which takes the dishes to a completely new level.
