Daman And Diu – The Two Gemstones Of India

The above picture depicts the beach located at Daman. Daman and Diu are approximately separated by a distance of 650 km from each other by road.

These are the coastal union territory of Western India. The coastal enclaves of Daman, for the past 450 years were under the control of the Portuguese. Diu is a small island off the coast of Gujarat. Back in the 19th century the union territories Goa, Daman and Diu were forcefully integrated into the Republic of India. Later on, Goa was granted statehood, leaving Daman and Diu as union territories. Most of the people speak English, Marathi, Gujarati and Hindi.

Daman’s history dates back to the time of the Mauryan Empire. The Portuguese conquered Daman in 1559; hence we can see the influence of the Portuguese in its architecture, lifestyle and food habits. Many people from Europe and Africa have settled in Daman. It is due to these influences that there are diverse cultures in their dance, food and music. Different forms of dance like the Verdigao, Vira and Mando shows strong Portuguese influence. Garba has made its way across the Gujarat border into Daman.

The river divides it into two different districts- Moti Daman and Nani Daman.

The moss-walled Fort present at Moti Daman sprawls over 30,000 sq mts. Its construction began in 1559 AD. This fort has well maintained grounds which houses the Governor’s residence. There are large splendid ruins visible from the fort.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus which was constructed in 17th century has a beautiful altar featuring painted sculptures of seven Christian saints, set into arches. The colors look bright and impressive for its time. Another nearby beautiful church you could visit is the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary.

To reach Nani Daman you will need to Cross the bridge over the Damanganga. The statue of Saint Jerome welcomes visitors at the large gateway. The Church of Our Lady of the Sea is the only pace to visit in Nani Daman.

With Gujarat being a dry state, Daman attracts circle of wanderers searching for wine. The Mirasol Water Park which is located within the Kadaiya Lake Garden, features a battery of rides and games.

The Devka beach offers pony and camel rides. If you prefer a quieter place then Jampore beach is the perfect spot for you. It’s safe for swimming too.

The above picture depicts the beach present at Diu. Driving to Diu is the ideal option to travel due to the excellent highways leading from Gujarat. The beach road is a fine welcome thanks to the present of beaches at some point.

But Diu offers more than just sunshine and seafood. Diu boasts of a multicultural heritage, and rich treasures which are unexpected joys to explore. Hiring a moped is a great idea for getting around it.

The Fort of Diu which is located just near the sea offers a spectacular, 180-degree view of the Arabian Sea.

For swimming, water sports and just chilling, the majestic Nagoa Beach fits perfectly as a haven. Look out for the lush Hoka trees which were uniquely introduced into Diu by its former Portuguese rulers. This beautiful beach gets filled up with vacationing families. The dhabas at this beach serves Gujarati thalis and snacks.

There is Krishna temple and a small lake at a small distance from Nagoa beach. Behind this temple, there is a massive baobab tree called Rukhda.

There is a unique Seashell Museum located around Nagoa which is a must see. A little away from Nagoa is a lush reserve forest. In this forest one can spot nilgai, sambar deer and variety of birds easily. Close to the premises of museum there are hoka forests offering safe nature walks.

Due to unexplored natural beauty and amazing beaches these two gems are perfect for a family getaway!
